I was in middle school when I ‘got into’ makeup. I remember at one point buying bright BLUE mascara?? I would also wear eyeliner up the wahzoo!
It was a look and a half for sure…
But all jokes aside, what I didn’t know (and many aren’t aware of) is that in the U.S., the government does not require safety testing of cosmetics before they go on the market.
Why is this concerning? A couple reasons:
- Children and young girls are more vulnerable to the effects of hazardous ingredients due to their thinner skin.
- In January 2020, the Environment Working Group (EWG) commissioned laboratory tests of a CHILDREN’S toy makeup kit (marketed by IQ Toys). The notorious carcinogen asbestos was found. Every gram of the eye shadow tested from this kit contained more than 4 million asbestos fiber structures. Any exposure to asbestos is a health danger, especially when you are young.
I tell you this to inform you about the unfortunate truth of the cosmetics industry regulation right now and this information is to empower you to make better choices in the products you buy and what companies you support with your dollars.
Let’s end with some good news! There is more positive movement than there has been since 1938 in changing the laws to protect our human health RIGHTS.
We shouldn’t have to teach our young girls that they need to look out for XYZ ingredients in their products, we should be able to trust that they are safe right when we purchase them.
This is why Beautycounter is so much bigger than a product, it is a movement. And one that I am very proud to be a part of!
