Motivation is a hot topic!
We all know when we’re motivated we get things done! It’s an awesome feeling, but what if you “lost” it and you can’t seem to “get it back”?
Loss of motivation feels like dragging your feet and dreading taking action (resistance). Not fun!
Sometimes you can catch the motivation starting to “fade” and pick it back up. Other times it just dies down and before you know it you are back to your old habits that you were trying to break free of in the first place!
Have you felt that before?
It can sound like:
“I just don’t feel motivated enough….”
“I don’t feel motivated to do it anymore”
“I lost my motivation”
OR
“I can’t find the motivation to do it.”
Why does this happen? Can you really lose your motivation?
There’s many reasons, but for this post I will break down a major mis-step in people’s approach to motivation.
Mis-step:
Looking for others to tell you what, how. when, how much, how often…JUST TELL ME WHAT TO DO.
This can be because:
You find it hard to make the RIGHT lifestyle choices to get to your goal AND you may second guess the ones you do make.
But here’s the reality…
No one’s going to be your life chaperone!
Clarification:
Seeking outside guidance and support is important, but ultimately your life choices AND motivation needs to come from within you. Especially for it to actually work for you long term.
Here’s why:
Relying on others 24/7 to tell you what to do is detrimental to your progress & is the opposite of creating an empowering and confident life.
It creates more “permission seeking” and can cause you to place other people (who you think have all the answers) on a pedestal. All this can ultimately cause you to lose touch with your own intuition and internal guidance system.
Then the cycle repeats!
At the end of the day this is YOUR life & no one (but YOU) can push you to take action towards your goals.
The good thing is you can learn to parent yourself and build self-discipline. You can sharpen that tool over time through practice and with repetition, just like building muscle in the gym.
You can strengthening the connection with your internal guidance system as well through practice and patience.
Start small (that’s why I like creating small daily action steps) and keep your word. If you tell yourself you are going to do something, do it!
I love starting the day, first thing in the morning, with a practice that fosters motivation, taps into my internal guidance system, and strengthens self discipline.
It has helped me so much that I created a step by step process for you to build your own too!
